The Specifics

350 means climate safety. To preserve our planet, scientists tell us we need to reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere from its current level of 396 parts per million to below 350 ppm. 350 is more than a number—it’s a symbol of where we need to go. 350.org is working hard to build a movement proportional to the crisis at hand, and we need you to help grow that movement as big as possible.

We want to hear about innovative ideas, exciting events, projects that catalyze discussion and thought, brave campaigns, and new ways of making our tent bigger and our movement stronger. How would you take the climate movement to the next level in your community?

Whether you want to plan a climate-themed bike tour to build connections, hold a statewide strategy meeting for climate activists, or start a climate organizers’ childcare co-op, we want to hear your ideas!

Submit a proposal between May 22 and June 20 (noon Pacific Time). From June 20 to July 3, we’ll open it up to a public vote. Rally your colleagues and friends to get behind your effort and join the GOOD community in selecting the winner. The top-voted submission will win a $1,000 grant to implement their idea.

Join GOOD Maker on Twitter @GOODmkr and Facebook.

Submission tips:

  • Include a photo or video that represents your idea. Photos should be in JPG, PNG, or GIF format, at least 570 × 345 pixels and no larger than 10MB. To include a video, use a YouTube URL.
  • Write at least 3-5 sentences that explain how the $1,000 award will enable you to implement your idea.
  • We especially encourage applications from: directly impacted communities, communities of color, women, LGBTQ people, small community organizations, and teams.
  • Email us at maker@goodinc.com with any questions.

As 350.org’s President and co-founder, Bill McKibben is fond of saying, “they’ve got more money than we could ever match, so we need some different currencies to work in: spirit, passion, and creativity."

Rules & Regulations

Here are a couple things to know about the legal stuff, as well as a few guidelines you should follow to make sure your idea makes it to the voting round:

  • All ideas must help build and expand the local climate movement.
  • Ideas must focus on a city or state in the United States (not a national campaign idea), should be new (projects already underway should have been initiated no more than 6 months prior to Challenge), should have a clear timeline (including specific start and end dates within the next 6 months), and should have a clear theory of change. Ideas should be as fun, creative, and visually engaging as possible.
  • Submissions cannot challenge, lobby for or seek to change current laws, enact any new laws or overthrow of any government.
  • This Challenge is open for submissions from May 22 noon PT to June 20 noon PT.
  • Submitted projects must be able to be activated with $1,000. Let us know how you’re going to put this money to work! The project with the most votes will receive $1,000 to implement their idea.
  • Projects will be featured on this page and public voting will be open from June 20 noon PT to July 3 noon PT.
  • In order to vote, log in with your GOOD account. If you don’t have a GOOD account, it’s free to join. All you need is an email address or a Facebook account to register. You will be emailed a link that you need to click in order to validate your address.
  • Read all the rules.

350.org knows the dire straits the planet is in and works some great efforts but we really need to change some hearts and minds quickly or all those efforts aren't going to count for much. I get daily requests for $s for various environmental projects from various groups, the one I would like to help fund is a large scale message that gets out to the masses, maybe a NY Times full page ad... Something that focuses on the fact that we are in a situation that has never been before - 7billion people on a planet where systems have been greatly compromised - listing the breadth of issues and the size of the repair effort it’s going to take to fix it, noting the fact that it is highly unlikely we can affect the right amount of change quickly enough without governments buy-in and involvement, noting the "repair" also requires a lot of people educating themselves and acting locally... I sent this note originally to Union of Concerned Scientist but it likely should be a collaborative effort. When I see that request for $s from an environmental group, I will anti up, so fast, and I imagine there are others that would help finance this bold move...... I know there will be repercussions but I don’t see change happening fast enough without broader involvement.

Can't be national? Can't challenge any existing laws? Seriously? It's like asking people to prevent aids transmission without mentioning sex or needles.

Hi, ktd! 350.org supports all sorts of climate organizing—from local awareness-building to international days of action, from campaigns to end fossil fuel subsidies to direct action against the Keystone XL pipeline. This Challenge was designed specifically to support local efforts, and we are bound by certain legal restrictions vis a vis "challenging existing laws."

I believe the answer is in community. I am currently living in cohousing. There are many ways to form community. If we are even able to create community with those around us, whether it be two households or twenty, we will be able to be less redundant. It will be possible to do ridesharing. share gardening bounty, maybe create a community garden, use thrift shops and employ a myriad of solutions to everyday living. Group Wisdom is the intangible out there just waiting to be accessed.

Are there any particular sectors that you want to focus on - transporation, energy, water, deforestation, pollution, GMOs? Or is anything fair game? And are you looking for direct actions, awareness campaigns?

350.org has been doing awareness campaign forever. Folks seem to be asking 'where's the beef?" I think it's time for serious direct action.

Hi, dcb. We are very much in agreement. For examples of 350.org's direct action, see the KXL protests last fall, the PNM action in New Mexico last month, the Don't Frack OH convergence in Ohio this past weekend, and today's sit-in at Rio+20. Direct action is a crucially important piece of building this movement—but so is supporting ongoing, smaller scale, everyday organizing, and great ideas for how to take that organizing to the next level.
