The Cool the Panhandle Funky Bicycle Fest will be held in a local park and will include an organized bicycle ride through our downtown area. Following the ride, cyclists will gather in the park to display their bicycles for the Funky Bicycle Contest. Each contest entry will be required to include some type of climate change/energy saving message or display as part of the “funkiness” of their bicycle. Bicycle tune-ups and safety checks, safety information, and demonstrations of how to outfit a bicycle for commuting will be held during the Fest. We will include solar and/or pedal-powered musical entertainment. We believe that if we make bicycling fun and attractive, we will attract more people to biking, the lagniappe being fewer automobiles on the streets. We can then step up our efforts to make our city friendlier to bicyclists and pedestrians through initiatives like more bicycle racks, shade trees, and changes to our streets that calm automobile traffic.
The Fest will be held in Pensacola, one of America’s oldest cities. Many downtown streets are actually friendly to bicycling, yet very few people ride bicycles. In recent months, we have directly experienced drought, heat waves, and flooding.
The Fest will take place on a Saturday in October or November 2012.
Change the culture of our community to one that encourages bicycling and a smaller carbon footprint.
Is your project a new idea, or was it initiated after November 2011?: This theme is new.
