The Idea

The founder of Patchworks Farm, Noel Schmidt, who originally founded a 350 outdoor eco-learning lab lost his "farm school" when he became ill in Nov. 2010. We are just now reforming and would love to use the funds to pay for a monthly meeting rental space and promotional materials to gather and build community around our program over a 5 month period. Our goal is to support nature education with a focus on Youth at Risk and offering them sustainable living skills: organic gardening and production of natural projects for sales, bee keeping, solar installation, biodiesel with waste oil, principles of localization.

Santa Rosa, California - we are a progressive community with many climate programs based here including the Climate Protection Campaign, the Post Carbon Institute and a burgeoning Transition Town project.

We would like to begin our community planning meetings in September 2012 and end in December 2012. These would be discussion groups in our community to help build a community around programs for youth at risk.

Our mission is to reconnect our community to nature in meaningful and life changing ways.

Is your project a new idea, or was it initiated after November 2011?: It is a new idea.

Grassroots movements drive the politics of a community. Coalition building among schools, churches, local businesses and organizations are the key to changing both policies and uniting communities. Educational programs can be the focal point of coalition building. Models such as Patchworks can produce a powerful ripple effect that can be replicated quickly around the world. Our goal is to create a model for climate change education that builds community, supports youth at risk and develops a spirit of collaboration among diverse groups in Santa Rosa. Our mission is to reconnect our community to nature in meaningful and life changing ways.
