Youth Talent Show; Climate-Themed Performances

The Idea

Too rarely do high-school youths seriously involve themselves in the climate movement. When involvement does occur, it is generally not sustained; rather, it is intermittent and noncommittal (e.g., participate in a festival, or weekend clean-up). By hosting a city-wide, high school talent show with performances required to be climate-themed, participating youths will actively and thoroughly infuse the international climate movement with their own creative passions. Indeed, the most sustained commitments arise from interdisciplinary and thoughtful innovation on the part of participants. Students will learn how their talents can express the joy, hope, strife, and yearning of the climate movement. The funding from 350.org and GOOD would be used to purchase large prizes (e.g. Gift Cards) to the top 5 or so acts. This idea uses a financial incentive to stimulate interest in participation, then encourages the more useful currency of youthful innovation.

Richmond, Virginia. The city of Richmond has a vibrant arts scene, with VCU having the top-ranked public art program in the nation. While many youths are talented and creative, their passions haven't been directed towards the climate movement.

Start organization and publicity in August 2012; host the Talent Show in early December 2012.

Encourage young artists to invest talents into climate movement; provide funds as initial incentive.

We would like to add that the grant money, if received, will also go toward publicity for the event, and the cost for a venue. However, we will strive towards reducing the venue price as much as possible, whether by obtaining a free space in a high school auditorium, or having the price reduced since it is a community-building, non-profit event.

What about making the prizes something related to environmental sustainability?
