Our project has four goals: 1) To increase awareness of the problem of wasted heat in dorm rooms and its effects on the climate, 2) To increase awareness and influence positive behavior in the use of heaters, 3) To reduce wasted heat in dorm rooms, and 4) To increase student comfort. We hope to accomplish these goals through the creation of a) An informational sticker campaign, b) Improving the existing interface on the heater dials, and c) An automated device that replaces the need for constant dial adjustment by busy students. We would use the challenge prize for the following: 1) Manufacturing the stickers, and 2) Supplies for prototyping the next iteration of our automated device. Please see our video for more! Our idea is different and exciting because it solves need with a solution that is immediate, accessible, feasible, an long-standing. Also, as this project is by students for students, it empowers young people to implement change in their community.
The project would be at Yale University in New Haven, CT - a city with a strong tradition of community-driven change and green initiatives. At Yale, there is an administrative push and high student interest for sustainability and reducing energy waste.
August 2012 through December 2012.
